Fill the Cup

Fill the Cup

So, what does the new normal really mean?  And more importantly, it is June 2020.  Does it still apply?

Early in our world of shelter in place, there was a heightened approach to community.  We saw random acts of kindness, unconditional giving, and a newfound trust.  We needed each other despite our shelter.  We needed technology.  We adopted and evolved.  Who knew that any age could do it?  I saw people walking, biking, playing yard games, and sitting in the front driveway in lawn chairs.  The world looked like a 1950s movie and I liked it.    It was time for a great pause.  That is, it was for me.

I admit I look at life with a glass half full.  It serves me.  One of my favorite writers Dr. Wayne Dyer once said, “you are what you think about all day long”.  That has stuck with me and I use it as my mantra when I feel that glass emptying.

But that is not easy for all.  Our new normal may not have been easy for many and especially those with compromised illnesses.  Some people found themselves very alone.  The power of relationships can never be underestimated.  We all need human interaction, trust, and caring.  Although our Zoom, Teams, Ring, and Skype allowed us to perform and engage at a different level with technology, remember our human side.  When appropriate, reach out to social distance a visit!  Make a phone call!

Mental health today has become a leading driver of chronic health care costs.   Stress, anxiety, loss, addiction, and loneliness are just some of those issues.  Our new normal and new world of work can be positive to rebuild a community of caring.  Mental Health is not a stigma. We all experience it.  Be aware, care, and truly mean it the next time you ask, “how are you”?  You just might be the one to fill someone’s empty glass!
